Weekend Getaway – Phoenix Arizona

Phoenix, Arizona, is not just a desert oasis; it’s a haven for adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts. Enjoying Arizona – A Weekend Getaway!  Recently my family and friends embarked on a short weekend trip to Phoenix.  The trip was centered around the Mesa Marathon, however, this weekend unfolded into a perfect blend of running, exploration, and breathtaking landscapes all with kids in tow!

Kicking off the Weekend – Mesa Marathon

Our weekend kicked off with a rainy, chilly but thrilling Mesa Marathon.  The energy and enthusiasm even with the rain created an unforgettable experience and spirits were high with our friend hitting a Personal Record.  Having completed the race, metals shining proudly – it set the tone for an exciting weekend!  After the marathon (and a nap!), we decided to explore Papago Park, a desert escape nestled within the city limits.

Papago Park

Pagago Park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, featuring unique geological formations and diverse desert flora.  The iconic Hole-in-the-Rock formation offers a stunning backdrop for photos, while the trails provide a chance to connect with nature.  We did about 2.5 miles of exploring however, you could make a day out of this urban escape by exploring the Desert Botanical Garden, relaxing in the pavilion with a picnic lunch or just winding through the hiking trails with picturesque landscapes, and stunning views of the city and beyond.

Dinner at The Perch Brewery

We decided to cap off our day at The Perch Brewery, a hidden gem in downtown Chandler.  The Perch offers a unique dining experience with an outdoor patio surrounded by lush greenery and live birds.  While here we savored delicious craft beers and an eclectic menu featuring items like the Perch Burger, and Beer Battered Avocado Tacos. Don’t leave without having the Crispy Brussel Sprouts topped with Goat cheese, Pomegranate, Pumpkin seeds, and Pomegranate Apple Vinegar Glaze!  The bowl of Mac and Cheese they offer on the kids menu was a Chef’s Kiss per our daughter!

Day 2 – Saguaro NAtional Park

On the second day, we set our sights on Saguaro National Park. Saguaro National Park is a haven for giant saguaro cacti and diverse desert landscapes.  Of course, our kids were able to earn their Junior Ranger Badge here.  If you are interested in learning more about the Junior Ranger program, check out our full post about it here!

Valley View Overlook Trail

After earning the badges and stocking up on some souvenir water bottle stickers and Cacti Candy from the gift shop, our first stop was the Valley View Overlook Trail.  This is a great adventure for those seeking a shorter, easier hike.  This trail provided sweeping vistas of the valley below. This is an ideal spot for photos and its simplicity is great for hikers of all skill levels.

Sendero Esperanza Trail

Our next stop and one I recommend highly is the Sendero Esperanza Trail.  It is a must-see for its breathtaking vistas, especially during sunset.  The trail meanders through the park, offering glimpses of towering Saguaros and the Sonoran Desert.  Did you know that Saguaros get their first arms at about 60-75 years old?  The Magical hues of the sunset painted the landscape in warm tones, creating a surreal experience that etched itself into our memories.  If visiting Seguaro National Park I highly recommend checking out this trail!

Saguaro National Park – Petroglyphs

Saguaro National Park is renowned for its towering Cacti and breathtaking landscapes, but also harbors a rich cultural history etched in stone – the petroglyphs.  These ancient rock carvings, created by indigenous peoples who called this region home, provide a fascinating glimpse into the past.  Scattered along select trails, these petroglyphs unveil intricate patterns, symbols, and depictions of daily life, offering a tangible connection to the native communities that once thrived in the Sonoran Desert.  As you hike through Saguaro National Park, keep an eye out for these captivating petroglyphs, where the desert whispers tales of a bygone era through the timeless artistry of its first inhabitants.

One last Stop – Pima Canyon

Before catching our flight back, we took advantage of the remaining time to explore Pima Canyon.  The trailhead a less than 20 minutes’ drive from the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and was the perfect stop to immerse ourselves one last time in the rugged beauty and serene desert surroundings.  The Pima Canyon Trail was the perfect spot before bidding farewell to the Valley of the Sun.
