Cycling Oregon’s Natural Beauty: The McKenzie Pass Scenic Bikeway a world class cycling route.

Begining the Journey:

The route begins at the small town of Sisters, Oregon and takes Cyclist up to the summit of McKenzie Pass, a volcanic mountain range that offers stunning views of the surrounding area.  Along the way, you pass through dense forests, ancient lava fields, and rolling hills, making it a must-do for any cycling enthusiast visiting the Pacific Northwest.

One of the most impressive stops on the McKenzie Pass Scenic Bikeway is Dee Wright Observatory, a stunning structure made entirely of volcanic rock. the observatory offers sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Dee wright Observatory:

The Dee Wright Observatory is a unique and fascinating structure located at the summit of McKenzie Pass. Built from volcanic rock, the observatory offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The view includes the Three Sisters mountains, Black Butte, and the vast lava fields that make up the area. The observatory is named after Dee Wright, an early Forest Service ranger who played a key role in the development of the McKenzie Pass Scenic Bikeway.

Continuing the Journey:

After the observatory, you can enjoy the thrilling descent to complete the full McKenzie Pass Scenic Bikeway to the town of Belknap Springs.  This section of the route takes you through even more stunning scenery, including towering mountains and the crystal-clear waters of the McKenzie River.  You can even enjoy a soak in the hot springs before turning back. (Belknap Hot Springs allows walk in guests to utilize the hot springs pool by the hour).

Belknap hot Springs:

We love Belknap Springs so much that we make Camp Yale at Belknap Hotsprings our home base and the start of the McKenzie Pass Scenic Bikeway.  The hot spring is a popular destination for visitors to relax and rejuvenate before embarking on the ride. The natural hot springs are believed to have therapeutic properties. Don’t forget to take a soak after the ride if you choose to make Belknap Springs your ending point!  The resort boasts a variety of accommodations, including cozy cabins and lodges, as well as RV and tent camping facilities.  Camp Yale the “sister” property to Belknap Hot Springs also offers Camping and Mountain Home Accommodations.  We highly recommend the mountain homes with accommodations for up to 10 guests.  Mountain homes are also dog friendly and include access to the hot spring pool at Belknap lodge.

Okay, Okay – Back to Cycling…

The Ascent from Camp Yale:

The ascent from Camp Yale up to the Dee Wright Observatory is a challenging but rewarding ride that takes you through some of the most stunning scenery in the region.  The route begins with a gradual climb through dense forests and rolling hills, with occasional views of the surrounding mountains.  As the route continues, the climb becomes steeper and more challenging, with several switchbacks and steep grades that require a bit of extra effort.  However, those stunning views from the summit of McKenzie Pass make it all worthwhile.
